Guthrie Castle’s roots run deep in our diverse community. A sixth generation resident of Shelby County, Guthrie graduated from Overton High School in 1970, and has lived and worked within the boundaries of House District 83 for nearly his entire life. He earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University, and his law practice has focused on matters of business and finance. Guthrie has two teenage daughters, Sarah Elizabeth and Cristia.
Early in life, he exhibited his leadership skills by earning his Eagle Scout award from Troop 86 at Second Presbyterian Church. During his adult years, he has served our community on various non-profit boards, including the Porter-Leath Children’s Center, Greater MSU,Inc., Memphis Leadership Foundation, Neighborhood Housing Opportunities (chairman for many years), Interim House, and Young Life. Guthrie is a long time member of Hope Presbyterian Church, and has been on Hope mission trips and participated in Hope projects in the Caldwell community which lies just north of downtown Memphis.
Guthrie has been active in local Democratic politics for many years, including service on the Shelby County Democratic Committee. Guthrie was elected to be an Al Gore delegate to the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta. In 1992, Guthrie was a candidate for the U.S. Congress in the Seventh Congressional District. In 2002, Guthrie was a candidate for the County Commission, losing his race by only 3 votes. For a many years, Guthrie served as President of the Germantown Democratic Club.
