Issues
Education
I support higher standards for educational excellence. Parents on public support whose children are truant or failing should be required to participate in parent/teacher conferences. Charter schools should be supported, but also held accountable for educational excellence. A quality college education must be accessible and affordable.
Energy Efficiency
I will promote new laws requiring the transition of state fleet vehicles away from dependence on foreign fuel sources. This is an issue of national security, as well as energy efficiency.
I will promote the creation of state-wide energy efficient building codes, and property tax credits for energy efficient capital improvements.
Gun Laws
I will fight the efforts of extremists to pass laws allowing guns to be carried in bars, parks, and schools.
Health Care
I will promote new laws that prohibit health insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, mental health services, and basic dental services. I will work hard ensure to that our regional trauma center (The Med) gets the funding it must have to provide its service to our community. I will work to properly fund TennCare and to keep CoverKids and CoverTennessee.
Choice
I will fight laws that unfairly limit a woman’s right to choose. It is not the role of government to make this choice, rather, it is an individual’s moral and health dilemma that she alone can determine under the unique circumstances that only she knows.
I do support non-stigmatizing educational efforts to inform young women of the seriousness of the choice. As a society, we should seek to create an environment where the right to choose is not made lightly or viewed as an inconsequential option.
Parks and Greenways
I will fight for proper maintenance, preservation, and additions to our state and local parks and greenways.
I strongly support the local Rails-to-Trails effort and the proper care and development of Shelby Farms.
Predatory Lenders
I will promote stricter regulation of predatory payday lenders.
Jobs and Economic Development
I will work hard to make Tennessee and Shelby County a favorable place to attract and create new decent paying jobs.
I believe that the Tennessee franchise and excise tax system should be abolished or restructured to relieve the destructive burden placed on Tennessee small businesses and the resulting suppression of new job creation.
I believe that sales tax on grocery bills should be abolished.
I believe that the Tennessee Hall income tax should be abolished or replaced because of the unfair burden it places on many people with fixed incomes.
In place of these regressive tax structures,we should place a fair obligation on those who have realized the greatest benefits from our economic system.
And for the sake of our children, state government must be fiscally sound. State government that runs up excessive debt puts an unfair burden on the next generation and robs our children of the choices and priorities they would choose when it is their opportunity to govern.
