DART
Greetings!
I'd just like to invite you to join a new group I'm moderating @ tndp.org, DART-Democrats Against Racism Tennessee. Whether it's …
• racial profiling among law enforcement (we just had to re-iterate w/ our 16 y/o that @ some point, he WILL be pulled over for DWB- "Driving While Black", all the more disheartening, as he's looking at a criminal justice career);
• "English Only" movements state-wide that mimic similar efforts across the country, where SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) watchdogs have found some “cross-pollination” with the “hives” of recognized hate groups;
• anti-Middle Eastern discrimination/anti-Muslim acts, from fear-mongering screed & rumors intended to disparage our president, to vandalism/graffiti @ mosques, to hostility & proposed discrimination in residential & commercial equal opportunity;
• de-facing of a mural on historic Jefferson Street (multiple incidents) celebrating Nashville’s civil rights pioneers & their struggle;
• motions in our state legislative bodies & some city/county governments seeking to commemorate & commend Arizona’s recent move, widely recognized as an attempt to institutionalize discrimination against persons who are deemed suspect, simply by their lack of fluent English;
AS DEMOCRATS, we have something to say about the plight of people of color, in the face of a rising tide of increased maltreatment of minority communities, whether in the small towns or urban areas of Tennessee, or nationwide. While we may have differing agendas as individuals, we can heed the warning call of our president & the standard-bearers of our party, and mobilize to add our voices to the throng. If discussion of matters of race, and action to stand with those marginalized by ignorant & despicable forces in our land piques your interest or stirs your blood, DART welcomes your wisdom, experience, & input!
Sincerely Yours,
Cathy Estes Sparks
