The Official Community for Tennessee's Democrats

I'm passing on this info sent out by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy followed by some contact info for our two Senators and their relevant legislative assistants:

Last Friday the House of Representatives made history with its first vote on a comprehensive energy plan that puts a legal limit on our nation’s global warming pollution.

This bill creates an average of 53,700 new jobs per state across the Southeast, and Voteits investments in energy efficiency are expected to save households approximately $1,050 by 2020 and $4,400 by 2030.

The final vote was close: 219 to 212, so every vote counted!

Your phone calls, emails and letters to Congress helped build critical support for the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009! In fact, some Representatives based their decision to support solely on the comments they received from constituents like you.

Of the 219 members who voted to support this bill, 24 were from our Southeastern states. The Representatives who voted to pass this bill include:

FL: Reps. Allen Boyd, Corrine Brown, Kathy Castor, Alan Grayson, Ron Klein, Suzanne Kosmas, Kendrick Meek, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Robert Wexler.

GA: Reps. Sanford Bishop, Hank Johnson, John Lewis, David Scott.

NC: Reps. GK Butterfield, Bob Etheridge, Brad Miller, David Price, Heath Shuler, Melvin Watt.

SC: Reps. Jim Clyburn, John Spratt.

TN: Reps. Steve Cohen, Jim Cooper, Bart Gordon.

Please take a moment to call the Representatives from your state that supported this legislation. Thank them for their leadership in creating a 21st century energy policy that creates jobs and saves consumers money in your state, and let them know you’re counting on them to continue supporting and strengthening this proposal.

If your Representative did not vote for the bill, consider calling them to urge them to support clean energy legislation like this in future votes.

Now it’s the Senate’s turn. SACE will continue working to strengthen this proposal as the Senate considers a similar plan to unleash a clean energy economy, establish energy independence and reduce our global warming pollution. Keep an eye peeled for future updates!

Thank you for taking action. There is still much work to do before the President can sign the American Clean Energy and Security Act, and you will continue to have an important role to play.

None of Sen. Alexander's legislative staff in Washington are listed as working on energy. I suppose he's already an expert since he talks about windmills so much:

I have an idea. If children from all over TN were to start a petition and letter-writing campaign to our senators, urging their support of the Clean Energy bill, maybe they would pay more attention to them than to us.. So would the press. Today I drafted such a petition, which I will be happy to send you if you can give me an email address. It is the future of the children and young people that is at stake.
