Gotta start with the comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency, the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency. Established in 1995, DSIRE is an ongoing project of the North Carolina Solar Center and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Here's DSIRE's database for Tennessee.

Great resources, but I still can't buy solar panels off the racks at Home Depot so please add links to steps we can take to start making our homes and businesses smarter, more efficient, more durable, sustainable, etc.. What improvements have lasting value or quick returns on investment? Tell us where you have spent money to save money and if it is working.

Sustainabletn.com's mission statement last year involved creating Tennessee's most comprehensive list of green links and they had a very strong list going, but they seem to have recently added some social networking functions and either not yet added any useful content or abandoned the notion. I'm going to go poke them and see if they give up any information (and vote Democrat.)

This is GREAT stuff! I had no idea DSIRE even existed. I won't be satisfied until renewable and clean energy solutions are 'plug-and-play' simple and affordable. If we can put man on the moon with the technology of a calculator - this should be possible. I'd happily drive an electric car or have solar panels - just needs to be easier to implement....somehow... I heard of some small start up companies installing these things and maintaining them.. but I bet it costs and arm, leg, etc.
"plug and play" solar panels... closer than you may think.

Success in making alternative energy ubiquitous, therefore cheap, deals a lot with creating awareness of what options we have available. Our national energy approach must be diversified to work: wind here, solar there, geothermal, etc. TVA has recently announced that they have received numerous responses to a request for alternative energy proposals and have committed to producing 50% of their power from renewables by 2020. I am interested to see what will spring up in Tennessee.

Energy Independence: cellulosic ethanol made from switchgrass grown by Tennessee's farmers in rural communities is becoming reality here in Tennessee. For more information go to www.generaenergy.net.
