CONGRESSIONAL PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS (CPC) LETTER
Earlier this week, a small group of conservative Blue Dog Democrats forced a compromise that would badly weaken the public option. Then yesterday, 57 representatives released a letter saying the deal is unacceptable—that "they simply cannot vote" for a bill that doesn't include a strong public health insurance option. As of yesterday, Representative Lincoln Davis had not signed the letter. If you wish to call Rep. Davis to urge him to sign the CPC letter demanding a strong public health insurance option, call 202-225-6831

HEALTH CARE REFORM RUMORS
Many of you have received emails containing misinformation about what health care reform will do. FactCheck.Org, a project of the Annenburg Public Policy Center at Univ of Pennsylvania, has researched the claims in these emails. Here are a couple that have made the rounds this week and FactCheck's conclusions:
False Euthenasia Claims
The claim that the House health care bill pushes suicide is nonsense

England and Canada's Health Care

Q: Is it true that persons older than 59 can’t get heart surgery in England?
A: There’s no such prohibition on heart operations in England, as a chain e-mail claims

LOBBYING BY THE INSURANCE AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES
The Center for Responsive Politics has published "Insurers Fight Public Health Plan" which discusses the amounts spent by health insurers on lobbying congress to influence health care reform legislation. PHYSICIANS FOR A NATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAM (PNHP) PROMOTE SINGLE PAYER HEALTH INSURANCE
A PNHP Congressional Fellow writes:
I (and other docs, nurses and activists) am currently spending a lot of my time in Congress meeting with legislators and their staff. Here lies the irony - we are finding many legislators who understand that the only real health reform is single payer but they need their constituents to understand this so they can go public with their support. Political will is actually created by the people. So I urge you to push for single payer reform and you will be surprised. The only way we can get there is through a strong grassroots movement.

In addition, we see the need for this movement in order to support the President. Even Congress and the President realize that their reform is not going to be effective and will be financially unsustainable.
