The Democratic party in our state needs to build momentume in general and i strongly believe that the enviroment is right for momentum to be built.
I' just joined the group. I'm surprised it is so small! I'm a lifelong Democrat and a flaming liberal. And I ALWAYS vote. I am not a southerner by birth (home town is San Francisco) so southern politics are a little hard for me to understand, but I have acclimated to this reality. Nashville is apparently an island of blue in a sea of red. Glad for that, at least. I am completely out and have been in a committed relationship for 11 years.
In my opinion, to refuse to vote is political suicide. You can't make change if you don't participate in making it happen. You can't complain that there are no candidates that support you if you don't vote. To say we have to have LGBT candidates to be represented is also not really accurate. There are a lot of straight people who do get it and do support us, It would be nice to have LGBT representation, but that's not the only way we can make progress. If it were, we would not have made the advances we have, and from my perspective (I'm 72!) that is a lot of progress. I grew up knowing I could go to jail simply for existing. We've come a long way, baby!
I agree... unfortunately most of the openly gay people I know refuse to vote because they have no candidates supporting their rights. The secret is to find a person capable of uniting the LGBT, the African American Community and the Blue Dogs and Liberals. As of yet we have not had that statewide person appear. I know African Americans who don't vote for the same reason. One must motivate all groups to bring life back to our party. On the upside many I have spoke with who I couldn't get to vote in the last cycle are irritated over the new pieces of legislation the governor signed into law and have decided they are going to vote and several have been asking me how to contact his office and such. Maybe the Republicans will force these groups together.
The GLBT community has no representation in this state... even most Democrats that are elected here do not support GLBT rights... we need a openly gay candidate for any office with help from The Victory Fund, whether they win or not would not matter, we would at least have a voice in our state party... as it stands we do not.
Tim,
I wonder the same thing. I've been subscribed to this website for almost a year, and this is first message I've received. So much for rallying the base. I have a better clue now how we got the Gov/Legislature we got.
