The radical right wing has launched a vicious campaign of racist and sexist attacks against Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's selection to replace the retiring Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court. Sotomayor's "compelling life story" involves a brilliant legal career after being raised in a South Bronx public housing project by parents who moved from Puerto Rico. Sotomayor graduated from Princeton University summa cum laude, edited the Yale Law Journal, then served as a "fearless and effective" New York City prosecutor and corporate lawyer before being appointed to the bench by President George H. W. Bush in 1992. "Since joining the Second Circuit in 1998, Sotomayor has authored over 150 opinions," only three of which have been overturned by the Supreme Court's conservative majority. During her time as an appeals judge, "her influence has grown significantly." Public reaction to the nomination of the first Latina and third woman to the nation's highest court is "decidedly more positive than negative." Former Bush adviser Mark McKinnon remarked, "If Republicans make a big deal of opposing Sotomayor, we will be hurling ourselves off a cliff." However, "the same right-wing extremists who drove the country into the ground," Salon's Glenn Greenwald writes, "continue to attack Sonia Sotomayor with blatant and ugly stereotypes." Right-wing pundit Pat Buchanan called Sotomayor an "affirmative action candidate," and Weekly Standard editor Fred Barnes claimed she "has benefited from affirmative action over the years tremendously." As hate-radio extremist Glenn Beck described the nomination: "Hey, Hispanic chick lady! You're empathetic ... you're in!" Think Progress http://pr.thinkprogress.org/
The hatred and mistrust being spewed by the extremist of the Right Wing have indirectly caused the cold blooded murder of three people thus far. I hope that they are real proud of themselves.
My question is "what do we do about it?" Do we merely shake our heads in disgust, or stand up by speaking out against them?
To be completely honest, I have a much deeper concern. I have said several times, over the last few months that Fake News (Fox News), as well as other Right Wing Hate mongers, have said everything but "kill him" to their followers while ranting against our President. It frightens me because they think that there will be tears for a couple of weeks, something "named" after him ,and then "business as usual". That would "NOT" be the case. They are oblivious to just how much President Obama is loved and admired in this country ,and around the world. President Obama captured the imagination of a "new" generation of Americans, our youth. In many ways, he is "their" president entrusted with "their" future, by them.
I know personally, that my husband, and I, are deeply comforted by a President of hope after losing thousands of dollars that we will never regain before retirement, to the stock market. To see him lied on, to see him portrayed as something that he is not, to see him blamed for the disasters brought about by the REPUBLICAN PARTY LEADERSHIP OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS, to see the American people used as pawns to advance the ANTI-AMERICAN agenda of greed, hatred, and fear-mongering, should be enough to make us all speak out!
