Not all is well for the Republican nominee in District 31, Brian Kelsey. A letter to the editor published October 16 in the Commercial Appeal under the heading, "Hoping for a Change in Course" stated:
"I didn't vote for Brian Kelsey this morning. Instead, I wrote "No guns in parks" as my write-in protest vote. When he comes up against the Democratic candidate for state Senate later this year, I will probably vote for his opponent.
"As a long-time Republican, I am disappointed that our party within the state of Tennessee has become too involved with the extreme right (gun-right freaks). As he supported state Rep. Curry Todd's bill in the House, I hold him responsible for passing this insane law.
"For the future of the Republican Party, I trust Kelsey and other candidates will once again become the party of fiscal responsibility and not just a sounding board for the extreme right.
"Meanwhile, I'm a previous supporter looking for other alternatives.".
