VAN Training Learn how to use Votebuilder (VAN), the voter file interface that ensures the State and County parties and candidates have state-of-the-art tools necessary to win elections. Learn how to create phone banks, walk lists, and targeted mailers.

Moving the Agenda (Lobbying) 101 A legislative skills training workshop that includes an overview of how the TN General Assembly operates; a discussion of the current political and legislative climate in Tennessee; and practical tips for lobbying and having effective meetings with elected officials.

New Media Outreach Twitter, Facebook, ning, and tndp.org all are avenues to disseminate information efficiently, become aware of current issues, and network with other Democrats across the state. Fundraising 101/FEC Fundraising is one of the most significant components of any successful campaign. This workshop will offer fundraising ideas and some easy-to-apply principles to improve your skills. Basic Computer Skills A successful County party, grassroots movement, or campaign is dependent upon basic computer knowledge and access to the Internet. This Class will help you set up your own email account and teach you how to use it most effectively. We also will discuss how to use the TNDP website to create groups and connect with others in your part of the state.

Candidate 101 Are you interested in running for office or exploring your options therein? Are you interested in recruiting candidates from your community for the 2010 elections? If so, this class will explore the traits and skills that define successful candidates and discuss recruiting strategies.

Afternoon Activities
Fiery Gizzard The Fiery Gizzard trail is one of the most diverse and beautiful in Tennessee and has been ranked as one of the top twenty-five backpacking trails in the U.S. by Backpacker magazine. Join local hiker, Jim Parrott, on a hike featuring cascading streams, numerous waterfalls, panoramic overlooks, extremely rocky gorges, gentle slopes and lush woodlands. Hike is rated easy to moderate.

St Andrews Sky high trees. Blueberry lined woodland paths leading to sweeping valley views. Swimming holes. The 265 students who attend St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School enjoy a world apart from the hustle and bustle of urban and suburban life. Transformed from the Colmore Farm to St. Andrew’s School in 1905, generations of students from around the world have lived and learned amongst the natural beauty and Spanish colonial architecture of the campus. Come enjoy a historic tour of the campus, including St. Andrew’s Chapel and the new McCrory Hall for the Performing Arts, or take a leisurely stroll along one of the many trails which wind their way all over the campus perimeter. 12 miles of trails from a 15 min. hike to a 2 1/2 mile hike down into Shakerag Hollow. The Mountain Lion Loop Trail map and information on St. Andrew's-Sewanee School will be available at registration. Hikes will be "on your own" however, we will meet at the SAS Quad with your host, Debbie Cleek, on the campus for a short historical overview of the campus beforehand.

Scenic Wonders Tour Vistas, Landmarks, and Waterfalls: Scenic Driving Tour of Southeastern Cumberland Plateau. All Saints Chapel to Foster Falls, enjoy local landmarks on a leisurely bus tour of the area.

University Tour The University of the South, known simply as "Sewanee" by its faculty,students and friends, is located 6 miles from Monteagle on a 13,000 acre domain. Founded in 1857, the distinctive campus architecture borrows from the Gothic tradition of Oxford and Cambridge with native sandstone buildings, garden pathways, and soaring bell towers. Join University faculty/staff for this campus tour and a walk through the history of the only university in the nation owned and governed by Dioceses of the Episcopal Church

Walking Tour of Monteagle Assembly Enjoy an afternoon stroll in historic Monteagle Sunday School Assembly. The Assembly Grounds established in 1882 as a Chautaqua, "a place where members and guests gather in the summer for fellowship and spiritual and intellectual growth." Enjoy Victorian cottages, wooden walking bridges and a bit of history.

Highlander Folk School Over the years,Highlander Folk School played an important role in many political movements, including the Southern labor movements of the 1930s and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1940s-60s. Hosted by the Cumberland Center for Justice & Peace, we will meet at May Justus Library. Join Scott Bates, an active Highlander Folk School member until it closed in Monteagle in the mid-60s, as he walks us through the history of the school, beginning with May Justus's involvement with Highlander. This is a walking tour of the former Highlander site.

Tracy City Tour Visit historic Tracy City founded in the middle 1800's with strong ties to the pioneer settlers of the Swiss Colony in Grundy County. Tour includes Dutch Maid Bakery, Tennessee's oldest family owned bakery est.1902; a walk through local history at Flury General Store est. 1905; Maruggs, the only US company still making curved hickory snaths for European style scythes; and an elegant English high tea served at Tea on the Mountain.

Yoga Classes Forget about politics for just one hour! Helen Stapleton, certified yoga instructor since 2005 and Democrat since birth, will be offering a yoga class where you can stretch, strengthen, balance, and relax! I teach an all-levels, all-ages class, and can offer variations and different versions of every pose to suit every participant. Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes; I have mats.

Golf - Sewanee or Tims Ford Choose from the beautiful 9-hole course in Sewanee on the campus of the University of the South or the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Tims Ford in Winchester. Tee times required.

Climbing Wall Located at Mountain Outfitters across the street from the Smokehouse. A good rainy day activity.

Winery-tasting/music Monteagle Winery, located across the street from the Smokehouse, offers free wine-tastings and winery tours all day long. Hours: Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday, noon - 6 p.m.

Grundy Lakes Grundy Lakes is the site of the Lone Rock Coke Ovens where locally mined coal was converted into coke by convict labor until 1896. The coke ovens remain intact and can be viewed, as well as the lakes built by the CCC in the late 30s. The Tennessee Coke, Iron and Railroad Company was the forerunner of US Steel and started here in Tracy City. Hike is ranger-guided and is rated easy.

Stone Door Located near Beersheba Springs, this hike is named for the Great Stone Door, a 150-foot deep crevice at the crest of the Cumberland Plateau. This hike is ranger-guided and is rated easy to moderate.

Tims Ford Easy four mile hike from picnic area to Weavers Point and back. Hike will begin at 2:00. The trail is paved and would be ideal for all family members. There are some expansive views of the lake and local wildlife. Contact Joan Hartvigsen (931) 962-0811

Winchester International Dogwood Festival This year's festival honors Japanese culture. In its 5th year, the festival celebrates Franklin County's flowering dogwood industry. More new dogwood varieties have been developed and named by nurserymen in Franklin County than anywhere in the world. A quick 18-mile drive down the mountain to Winchester takes you to this annual event featuring arts and crafts, plant auction, food vendors, nursery vendors and 2 stages of entertainment. www.winchesterdogwoodfestival.com
