On November 5, 1872, 139 years ago, 48 years before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote, women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony and a group of women in Rochester, N.Y., cast votes in the presidential election. MARY TRAVERS, Nov 9, 1936 - Sep 16, 2009, RIP
Mary Travers, the great folk singer of Peter, Paul and Mary, died Wednesday afternoon at 72. The trio got together in 1961, ... they've been performing and recording albums together until now. Mary was passionate about the civil-rights and anti-war movements, and many of the groups songs -- and most famous performance venues such as the March on Washington in 1963 -- reflect that.

I resigned from the White House on Sept. 6, and I have remained silent since then--in keeping with my promise not to be a distraction during a key moment in the Obama Presidency.

- Susan- If you go to the OFA Listening Tour in Jackson, look for Emily Flatterry of the OFA team. I'm giveing her xeroxed copies of the pictures from the March on Washington &t pictures of us walking to the Administration building to start the sit-in at Lambuth. Lyle McLevain

- ALso- Were you part of the spontanwoud sit in in the Admin building when Dre. Wilder remade a comment threatening Dr. Jack Johnson ,the Sociology professor? The meeting was in the chapel & almost all the walked out in protest & directly to the admin building. Dr. Mayo & Mrs. Mulherin, the Registar (& fellow Episcopalian) &I think Dr. Berryman visted us there & ordered pizza for us. The Commercial Appeal picked up the wire story & it made the Today Show. My dad called & threatened to pull me out for participating. It was really cool.

- Yes, I was. I was there from Sept 1970 until January / Interim of 1972. My dad had a near fatal heart attack, so I quit school & went back to Nashville. I had seen McGovern speak at Vanderbilt. When I went back, I mentioned to Tommy Pyron that McGovern had talked about a March on April 24th & I thought we should send some folks. We started collecting funds in the student union that day- from a card table. Dr. Israel, & Dr. Davenport lent us bail money, in case we were arrested. Tommy Pyron, Michelle Pollard & I painted signs in the KA house. Tommy was pledge master( He got in trouble for that & we had to leave). Our sign" Pray for Peace" hanging from the railing at the chapel entrance, made it into the annual. We marched down PA Ave. next to Pete Seeger & sat on Capital Hill for the program -including Peter, Paul & Mary. That's when Kerry turned in his medals.Kennedy, Frank Church, Angela Davis all spoke. There were more than 500,000 people there. It looked like Obama's inaguration.

- Hi, Susan- I'm from Davidson Coounty. Glad to see somthing is happening at Lambuth. When I was there as a student we held a sit-in & sent 16 to the March on Washington. Lyle McLevain
