Frank Buck served the 4oth District for well over two decades. He was a responsible advocate for this district and "took care of business." When a road needed to be built, or a bridge repaired, it got done. If you had a problem with a state agency, you could call Frank and the issue would be addressed. I believe it is called "serving your constituents."
This last election cycle Frank Buck retired after two decades of service to the people of the 40th district which presently includes DeKalb, Macon, and Smith County. His seat was won by a Republican newcomer named Terry Weaver. This is the same Terry Weaver whose husband was screaming "Judas" at Speaker Kent Williams in the capital hallway after the speaker election. It is safe to say that Terry Weaver is no Frank Buck.
I was reading the Carthage Courrier online. This is Smith County's main periodical. The Cordell Hull Bridge which provides the downtown Carthage district with its major access point has been shut down in need of repairs. According to the article, the result has been closed businesses and a complete disappearance of downtown traffic.
As Gov. Bredesen puts together the budget which of course includes the Obama stimulus dollars, it appears that the funding is present to complete the bridge work. Terry Weaver even has a plan to get the money directed to the bridge project. She has, according to the article, urged the concerned citizens of Carthage to write to the govenor to ask for the funds. You heard me correctly, the elected STATE REPRESENTATIVE from the 40th district wants her constituents to write to the govenor to get bridge funding. One would assume that soliciting the govenor for funding for a bridge project might actually be the task of the district's elected representative.
I have heard of "passing the buck" but I have never seen it passed to the constituents. As a resident of DeKalb County in the 40th district, I hope to see a strong democractic candidate take on Mrs. Weaver who is actually intending to serve as a representative.
