If the state will require valid state photo ID to vote, then they should provide it to anyone that needs it for no fee. This would include a copy of their birth certificate, if one was needed.

I think a solution to this problem would be to issue photo voter registration cards from the county. Any support for this idea?

One of the many things I believe the party is either not speaking to, or just completely ignoring is the placement of the fights the Republican Party is establishing now. What legislatures, or Executives of this State do is of virtually no consequence to them. Any prospect of reversal or repeal must necessarily lie within the Courts. Now, if you were a Republican Legislator, and you knew the chances of your legislation lay with the Courts in our State, how concerned would you be? The battle must be vocal, visible, and vital, now.

It's taken a while for us to forget that a multi=billion dollar surplus was taken, raping our National Treasury. When the former Administration found out how much was left, then came TARP. That any citizen of this country would actually posit an opinion that our current financial crisis lies at our current President's feet is beyond ludicrous. The same truth applies here at home, too. As President Clinton said last week, "Truth is power. Power lies, in this country, with our people. How can our people exercise their power if they do not know the truth?"

It's time to deliver, by whatever legal means possible, the truth our party holds, and ram it down the Republican throat! I can think of no better place to begin that right here, where I live.

Here is news from The Voting News

Sixteen Democratic senators want the Justice Department to look into whether voting rights are being jeopardized in states that require photo identification in order for people to vote.

The lawmakers wrote Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday to express concern that millions of voters do not have a government-issued ID — particularly older people, racial minorities, low-income voters and students. The senators say the photo ID requirements have the potential to block millions of eligible people from exercising their right to vote.

  • You can get your free voter ID card starting on Friday but there is a process voters are going to have to go through. S. Ross explains "The cards may not cost anything to get, but they aren't easy either. In order to get one you'll need a primary proof of identity, a secondary proof of identity and two proofs of residency." The might be some folks who need help getting their cards. If you want to help folks who might not have transportation, call your local democratic party chairperson on how you can help people get to voter registration offices and get this worked out so there isn't any confusion near election time. Photo ID's are a bad idea in my book akin to a poll tax which was outlawed way back when...And if student ID"s are not allowed will make it harder for them to vote as several don't have anything else.  Besides Republicans have made the statement it "would cut out many students" who they knew would more then likely vote Democratic.  I was angered when our County Party required one as proof of residency when our county convention was held.....That was wrong, wrong ,wrong...The TNDP should have been all over that...I called the County Chair at the time and  told them it was like they were rubber stamping the new law...Was told that, even one Rep on the State of TN Executive Committee approved, She put her stamp of approval on this and it probably helped to get this farce of a bill passed....

Actually, as part of SB1666 they do, however they have made the bar very high.  Must have a Birth Cert., SS card, and 2 forms of proof of residency: bill, rental agreement, voter reg. card.

If you can do all that, you can get a free ID.

Good idea on the photo registration cards!! Of course you can use your gun carry permit but no student ID's.

Don't know how far this will go but . The Tennessee the state attorney general issued an opinion that the Voter ID bill is unconstitutional......Chances are if it gets as far as  SCOTUS  they will rule in the Republicans favor.   I agree with what you said, the state should provide all that is needed.
