Resources to ensure nonpartisan, fair elections

In my blog post yesterday, I mentioned the politicization of the Knox County Election Commission after Knox Co. GOP chair Ray Jenkins distributed a letter calling for Greg MacKay to be replaced with a Republican.

I've done a bit more research - it's astonishing to me how little Tennessee (the home state of Al Gore) has done to make sure that we have free, fair, safe, and accurate elections. Tennessee is still using electronic "black box" voting machines without the possibility of any paper trail or verifiable ballot. Tennessee couldn't recount if they wanted to - there's no way to know if there were electronic malfunctions.

As Mary Mancini of Liberadio.com has been telling us for months, in 2009 we are supposed to begin a shift in Tennessee to using paper ballots - ballots which provide a paper trail, a possibility for a confirmation receipt for voters, and a greater guarantee of accuracy and less possibility for fraud by election officials. But as the Voter Confidence Act (already passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the State Legislature) is set to be implemented, now Republicans are trying to claim that it's too expensive to make sure that the voting machines are changed.

Now seriously, people - is it really not worth the investment to make sure that every legally cast vote is counted accurately? Is it really not worth the investment to ensure that elections are fair and that we have a way to guarantee that voters' voices are heard correctly?
