The Official Community for Tennessee's Democrats

Will Roy Herron, Democrat TN, Prove the Washington Belt Pundits Wrong?

Stuart James

The Washington belt insiders are already calling the governor's race in Tennessee-they say that after eight years of Democratic "rule" in the Tennessee Governor's mansion the Republicans will win. The same can be said for some of the political insiders in Tennessee's capital, Nashville. The Nashville belt insiders appear to be conceding the governor's mansion to any of the Republican candidates. However, despite these early predictions, Democrats do have a candidate who has the ability to prove the beltway pundits wrong.

Tennessee is a unique southern state, a blend of urban and rural communities that tends to be more conservative. Republicans believe the state is solidly red; Democrats are working to make the state blue. In the 2008 elections, Democrats took it on the chin by losing their majority in the State House of Representatives.

Republicans enjoy a one-vote majority in the State House, but because of Democratic maneuvering Democrats are in a tenuous power-sharing arrangement with the Republican leadership-with Democrats chairing roughly half the committees.

Political pundits believe that the 2008 elections indicate a trend in Tennessee-a trend making the state more red. However, a close analysis of the 2008 election reveals Democrats were in a "Perfect Storm." John McCain was popular in Tennessee, the Democrats failed to mobilize voters on a local level, and Barack Obama paid no attention to the get out the vote effort in Tennessee-conceding the state as Republican.

The dynamics may be different in 2010, and will change if the Democrats pay close attention to who they nominate as their candidate for governor. A strong Democratic candidate will help Democrats in their efforts to recapture the State House.

To win, the Democrats must nominate an electable candidate and that candidate is Roy Herron. Roy Herron is the only candidate who has a unique mix of rural and urban experiences they give him the most important quality of all of the candidates-electability.

Roy Herron is from Dresden Tennessee. He was raised in rural Tennessee, but gained wide political experience by working in the state capitol, Nashville. Throughout his political career, Roy Herron has been building bridges between urban and rural Tennessee, taking his rural grassroots and using them effectively in helping rural and urban areas to develop and grow.

Herron is not forgetting that rural Tennessee is the backbone of the state. He is equally interested in their interests, and has a unique ability to bridge the gap between rural and urban in his approach to politics. This unique experience makes him the most electable Democrat.

Additionally, Herron will appeal to a cross-section of voters. He is an ordained minister, a lawyer, and a family man. His speaking abilities are exceptional, and he understands grassroots campaigning-he understands that he needs to carry rural Tennessee and do well in urban Tennessee to win his nomination and, ultimately, the governor's race.

Herron is more electable than the remainder of the field, because he understands that politics is not a top-down game, politics is a grassroots game that requires a locally based organization to get local voters out to vote. Herron uses a bottom-up approach by using people who live in the local communities throughout the state to build his base of support. He understands that local elections help drive statewide elections-he understands how to win by using local communities to mobilize voters in statewide elections. He knows how to target and he knows where his votes are in each local community.

Democrats will have an opportunity to elect a nominee who can appeal to a wide cross-section of the state-a nominee who can out maneuver any of the other Republican candidates in the general election. When considering who to elect as their nominee, Democrats should think largely about electability. Democrats, with Roy Herron, have a unique opportunity to elect a nominee who will remain largely true to his roots while appealing to the key swing voters.

Democrats have their first opportunity to send a strong message across the state in Chattanooga Tennessee on November 16, 2009. The Hamilton County Democratic Party, who is headquartered in the fourth largest city in Tennessee, will conduct a straw poll for the gubernatorial candidates.

Democrats, in order to send a clear message to their potential Republican opponents, should vote for their strongest candidate in this straw poll. Democrats must accentuate electability-if Democrats vote for and support Roy Herron they will send a message of electability across the state.

Although all of the candidates are outstanding, Roy Herron is the strongest electable candidate against any of the potential Republican nominees. Mr. Herron has a fire in his belly, a unique perspective on state politics, and a drive to succeed. He understands the art of compromise, and the art of inclusion. He has a vision that is best suited for all of the people of Tennessee. His unique approach to the election will bring urban and rural areas together-and will strengthen the state. Democrats have a once in a lifetime opportunity to send a strong message that they believe they will win the governor's mansion in 2010-this opportunity comes at the annual Kefauver Dinner in Hamilton County Tennessee.

If Democrats see the light, they can send a strong message from this straw poll that they have an electable candidate for governor. That electable candidate is Roy Herron.

The Kefauver Dinner is Monday November 16, 2009.
